Jose De Jesus Gutierrez

2nd Degree Black Belt

Raised in Southern California, first-generation Mexican American Jose Gutierrez grew up immersed in athletics, the outdoors, and California’s vibrant culture. Long days spent skating the shores of Huntington Beach shaped his creativity and perseverance—traits that later became foundational to his jiu-jitsu style.

Jose began training in 2007 at a local MMA gym, initially focusing on Muay Thai. Once he put on the gi, his path was clear. He committed fully to jiu-jitsu at All-American Jiu-Jitsu, eventually seeking mentorship under his idol, Leo Vieira, and Team Checkmat.

In 2012, Jose joined the Checkmat affiliate Conde Koma and later followed his instructor Robson “Robynho” Rodrigues to establish Checkmat Buena Park. He earned his black belt in 2015 as Robynho’s second promoted student. In 2016, Jose spent a pivotal year training at Checkmat Headquarters under Master Leo Vieira, gaining invaluable experience within one of the sport’s most respected teams.

After returning to Buena Park in 2017 and competing successfully, Jose pursued a long-held goal of opening his own academy. Drawn to a coastal city reminiscent of his childhood, he relocated to Brownsville and founded Checkmat BTX. His mission is to bring the intensity, culture, and level of California jiu-jitsu to Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley.
